Ken J. Swords won $1 million on the Limited Edition World Series Red Sox Instant Ticket just hours after the new game hit the market on Tuesday. Swords said he bought the ticket in memory of his nephew Evan, who recently died from cancer.

“He was a huge Red Sox fan and the Jimmy Fund took good care of him,” Swords said as he picked up his prize yesterday at Lottery headquarters in Braintree.

“That was the karma,” added Swords’ girlfriend Maria Metz.

Stephen J. Hohne dutifully returned his bottles and cans all year long and put the change aside. On his New Year’s trip to recycle bottles, Hohne of Oxford plunked down his deposit money on instant Lottery tickets.

His efforts paid off tremendously when he bought a few Billion Dollar Blockbuster tickets at the Shaw’s Supermarket on Southbridge Street in Auburn. One of the tickets was a winner for $10 million -- the largest instant prize ever awarded by the Massachusetts State Lottery.

“I’ve been doing this for the past six or so years,” Hohne said at Lottery headquarters in Braintree. “Last year, I won $1,000. I guess I’ll keep doing it.”

He received his first of 20 annuity checks for $500,000 before taxes today. Hohne is the third Massachusetts Lottery player to win the gigantic, $10 million instant prize. The Shaw’s Supermarket that sold the lucky ticket will receive a $50,000 commission on the sale.

“It is very exciting for us to have sold this $10 million ticket. We are thrilled for the customer and their good fortune,” said Peter Babaian, store director at the Auburn Shaw’s Supermarket.
